Oscar¨ Night Gala in D.C. to Fund Youth Programs

Club Zei Event Features Food, Fun, and Entertainment

(Washington, D.C., March 7, 1995) --- An autographed Speedo¨ swimsuit from World Diving Champion Greg Louganis, ABC-TV's telecast of the 67th Annual Academy Awards¨ from Hollywood, and food from some of Washington's best restaurants and caterers are a few of the features in store for you later this month.

On Monday, March 27, at 8:00 p.m., Gays and Lesbians for Individual Liberty (GLIL) will present an Academy Awards¨ Celebration for Youth to benefit the Sexual Minority Youth Assistance League (SMYAL) at Club Zei, 1415 Zei Alley, N.W. (near 14th and Eye Streets, N.W. at the McPherson Square Metro), in downtown Washington. The event's host committee includes D.C. Councilmembers Harold Brazil, Linda Cropp, Charlene Drew-Jarvis, Jack Evans, William P. Lightfoot, and John Ray.

The Louganis Speedo¨ is just one item that will be auctioned during the evening, said Gene A. Cisewski (pronounced sha SEV ski), the event's coordinator. Other autographed items up for auction include a print of "Eunice" from Carol Burnett, the script of the "Chuckles Bites the Dust" episode from Mary Tyler Moore, a photo signed by the cast of Melrose Place from producer Aaron Spelling, and the script from a new play by Edward Albee.

The Academy Awards¨ Celebration for Youth will occupy all three floors of Club Zei, with television monitors throughout the club showing the live Oscar telecast. During commercial breaks, youth from SMYAL will perform musical and dramatic numbers.

GLIL, the sponsoring organization, is a non-partisan group that embraces and celebrates individual freedom while recognizing the importance of individual responsibility. One hundred percent of the proceeds from this event will go to SMYAL.

Each year more than 700 young people from Northern Virginia, Washington, D.C., and D.C.'s Maryland suburbs take part in SMYAL support groups and drop- in programs. SMYAL's Helpline often serves as the first or only point of contact for teenagers and young adults actively questioning or exploring issues related to their sexuality. SMYAL supports these young people by providingfree services in a safe, confidential, and non-judgmental environment. SMYAL also works to increase public awareness and understanding through training and education.

The Academy Awards¨ Celebration for Youth will be emceed by local cable TV personalities Michelle Michaels and Sue Carrington. Tickets, priced at $25 and $100, are available at Lambda Rising Books (1625 Connecticut Avenue, N.W.) and Lammas Bookstore (1426 - 21st Street, N.W.).
